International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (Years 1 - 6)
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), with the inclusion of Indonesian national characteristics as regulated by the Indonesian Government, provides the educational framework for the Elementary School.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an inquiry based programme designed to support each student with the skills to be an active, independent learner for life. It focuses on the growth of the developing child, encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development. The aim of the programme is to support Indonesian and expatriate students to become internationally minded, global citizens.
The trans-disciplinary nature of the PYP curriculum supports the integration of subjects into Units of Inquiry. Maths skills are taught separately using inquiry methodology. Specialist teachers deliver Mandarin, Religion, PE and The Arts to all students across Years 1-6.
English is the language of classroom instruction, greetings, notices and informal conversation between students and teachers. The provision of language support for students who speak neither English nor Indonesian is discussed at the time of enrolment.
Qualified native English speaking expatriate teachers coordinate and deliver an intensive English Literacy Programme to students at each grade level. Expatriate teachers also work with IB trained Indonesian teachers to plan and teach the general programme.
Students are expected to complete homework set on a regular basis.
Student assessment is varied and continuous to meet the needs of each component of the programme. Students meet the requirements established by the National Ministry of Education as well as those set by the IBO. A Graduation Certificate is presented to Year 6 students who meet these requirements.
In Year 6 students carry out an extended inquiry project, known as the PYP Exhibition, under the guidance of their teachers. It provides an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the student profile that have been developing throughout the PYP. It is a culminating experience marking the transition from the Primary Years Programme to the Middle Years Programme (MYP).
Parents as partners in the learning process are welcomed in the school. Regular workshops and information sessions are provided to assist parents. The reporting system involves parents and includes two parent-student-teacher conferences, home student-led conferences and written reports at the conclusion of each semester.
